Under the Pendulum Sun was a dazzling fantasy/horror novel that I really enjoyed. Having studied many books written in the time period that this book is emulating I felt very at-home and had no problem getting into the flow of things. This book is partly an adventure in a strange land and partly a treatise on the nature of the souls of faeries ala Victorian era Anglicanism. While I often get turned off by books that are so Christian with their content, in this case because it was the version of Christianity that I've been comfortable reading about in books like Jane Eyre and Hard Times that it didn't bother me much at all, and I actually enjoyed the main character's quest to find answers through a religious lens.HOWEVER, I have to spoil a bit of the book in order to provide a fair warning for prospective readers. This concerns the book's focus on a very taboo sort of relationship that, when I told some of my friends about it, they reacted in disgust.First I'll make some space so Amazon doesn't' shove this in your faces, haha.An essential part of this book details an incestuous relationship that turns sexual. While the sex isn't graphic - being that this book is trying to emulate a time when you had to be pretty on the sly about sex - the incest is there, it's discussed, and the characters involved aren't "punished". If incest squicks you out, then I implore you to skip this book and read another with a similar theme. Perhaps you might want to check out the wonderfully weird book that's referenced within this one, by Margaret Cavendish called The Burning World. It's so wacky and there is no incest in it.However if incest doesn't bother you, like I said the depictions of sex are very tame, and I enjoyed the book very much. But it came as a surprise to me since none of the reviews I saw mentioned it, so I just wanted to let people know in case they would have the reaction that my friends had!

Even if you share my reservations on stories told in first person, what Jeannette Ng has crafted here is excellent and well worth reading.The narrative leans far more heavily on Christian theology than I'd imagined it would, which probably says more about the limits of my imagination than of the author's skill, since it says right on the cover that it is indeed a story about missionaries!I had assumed it would deal more with Arcadia, rather than the faith of the missionaries visiting there, but as with all fairy-tales, the true story lies in the magical world's impact upon us, rather than our impact on it. Like a true gothic novel of the period, it also dwells far more on the existential crises of the characters than in any visceral action of the fae. I can understand why the back cover might shy away from those particular disclosures, because in the abstract that probably sounds boring, but in the actual expression of those ideas, it certainly isn't.Under the Pendulum Sun feels like the previously undiscovered work of some Bronte sister that had stumbled onto a story with surprisingly modern pacing. It feels strangely undated to read, fitting neatly as neither an actual gothic novel, nor as one for our own period, but I felt that gave the narrator a special realism: we saw the story entirely through her eyes, and so the story was presented as she might have seen it, alien to both Victorian and modern readers alike.Under the Pendulum Sun is the story of sinners, pressed into a world where maybe those sins don't count the same way, among creatures who may or may not even have souls to save. It's far more about their own less-than-savory failings than it is the mysteries of the fae, even as those mysteries surround them. It's a surprisingly spiritual story, which greatly lends to its period authenticity. Still, the mysteries of the fae swirl all around, often literally, just beyond the walls of the castle where most of the action is set. The mysterious wonders of the fae sparkle, from their clockwork sun, to the hidden delights of the goblin-market, to the majestic uniqueness of the land-bound "sea whale".The world glimpsed here is unique, and the story is satisfyingly self-contained while still leaving the reader to consider marvels of the fae that spill beyond the pages presented. It's a very satisfying read, and while not of the faith myself, I imagine that the theological musings presented would add yet another dimension for those who are. I greatly enjoyed the book and will look forward to the author's next.

Love Avatar. However with this edition the book isn't as wide as the previous. which gives full page graphics but with the downside of no room for commentary. So now there is no difference between the library edition and the individual novels when it comes to information. I hope this is not a trend that will continue. Because then there is no reason to buy the library edition. (I collect everything cannon to the shows and no more) I don't want this to be how they make the library edition from now on. But if it is I hope it will only be with the Korra novels. And not the last airbender when imbalance comes out. So there is at least some consistency.

This is a magical, fun, fascinating book with layers on layers of learning. My son is 8 and adores this book, and I love it just as much. My dad is 75 and he loves it too! We have had it for a few months and we continue to discover new things every time we read it. There is a lot of text and it can be a bit advanced for a 3rd grader, but he still enjoys perusing through it. Can't wait to get PIrateology.

This book is awesome!!! Kept my 10 yr old busy for an entire day. Love all the secret compartments, items that come out, maps, etc.

Cute and simple. Have been eying this deck for weeks via Kick Starter. Was pleasantly surprised when I saw that it was available on Amazon. Nice texture and flexible card stock. The color is cute and bubbly, and I’m a fan of the drawings—love it all around!

I purchased this as a birthday gift for a friend who is interested in tarot decks, and they really loved it. It’s a great way to support an independent artist as well.

i Love the pink color and that the designs aren’t twee. The cards have a nice texture and weight and the little handbook is a welcome addition.

So I bought this deck during the kickstarter, and I love it so much. Then my cousin came over and saw it amongst my collection and fell in love. So I bought her one for her birthday. It was a big hit.
