We Set the Dark on Fire

From School Library Journal

Gr 8 Up-As the top Primera of the Medio School for Girls, Dani has spent the last five years trying to forget the world her parents fought hard to leave behind-the world beyond the border wall, where people are dying of hunger and illness. Dani has learned to check her emotions and prepare to be her husband's equal, a partner who will help him in all things political. Then she is paired with longtime enemy Carmen Santos, a Segunda who, with her beauty and grace, completes the third side of the marriage triangle to Mateo. When Sota, a member of La Voz-a group seeking to bring down the government that keeps people like Dani's family in the margins-saves Dani by providing her with legitimate documents to keep the government from discovering her true origins, Dani becomes entwined in the group's goals, using her role as Mateo's wife to pass on his plans to the rebellion. As Dani becomes more involved with La Voz, she struggles to keep her feelings for Carmen at bay-emotions that, in Medio, are forbidden. Intricate mythology sets the scene for a cast of characters full of complex motivations. Readers will find themselves drawn to a richly constructed world full of fantasy and diversity, with a mystery that will keep them guessing until the very end. VERDICT A must-have fantasy filled with action and political intrigue.-Selenia Paz, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TXα(c) Copyright 2011. So, I totally had judged a book by its cover on this one. I was SO excited to read it because of the pretty art, and got even more excited reading about the Hispanic influences on the novel. The representation in this novel is great, and the romance felt genuine. Definitely wasn’t forced or contrived, and I was really rooting for them.Overall, there were some aspects in this world that I don’t think have been fully fleshed out, but the book was great. You’re kept wondering until the very last few pages, and I’m already SO ready for book 2.4.5/5 stars- I would recommend this to fans of the genre, in addition to less avid readers if they’re searching for LGTBQ representation.

If you are ready to write a trilogy (or whatever), you still have to end the first book at a reasonable stopping point. It is not a spoiler to say that this book ends on a cliffhanger—not cool.If I had been thrilled by the rest, I'd continue to read the series anyway, but I found the plot derivative (despite the laudable twist) and the writing uninspired. The writer has potential, and I hope the author is not too wrapped in this series to do more writing with more original storylines.

This was [kisses my fingertips like a true Italian].First, the worldbuilding was delightful. It was unabashedly Latinx in the food, the colors, the language; and even beyond the obvious, it's woven into all the coziest parts of the world. Everything felt so lively! The society was appropriately infuriating, starting from the myth that served as the book's prologue. I wanted to throw punches starting on page three.(But I feel it's worth noting that this righteous anger was fun, in a way, because it never felt hopeless. And unlike Ember in the Ashes, the threat of rape didn't smack you in the face every chapter. That was nice.)I love Dani so much. Our protagonist, the reader's centerpiece for the rebellion, is initially NOT here for a rebellion. She is a frightened survivalist of a young woman who uses a sharp analytical mind and a hundred masks to fake her way through high society. She has so much heart and spends so much time smothering it.Which means that there is so much delicious character development and dynamic to be had here. Dani changes, and she changes the people around her and reflects them in such interesting ways. And the romance...! It was unbelievably tender. I was holding my breath the whole time. I think the plot was very well paced, especially considering Dani's analytical habits. And I was so invested that I nearly threw the book when I finished it.But the last thing I have to talk about is the writing. The phrasing was so vivid. Every aspect of a description was in motion, and every action was colorful. It was captivating. I get the feeling Mejia's writing is only going to get more enchanting from here.

Great debut! I enjoyed the writing and the world this book takes place in however I felt the romance needed more depth and felt a little rushed as well as the plot at times, though I would definitely say this book is more plot heavy than anything else. It was definitely a quick read, the pages seemed to fly by whenever I could find the time to read and I enjoyed the story the entire time. I will be reading the sequel and recommend this to YA fantasy readers looking for books with important messages and diversity!

To me, it seemed as though life just happened to the protagonist and we witness her confused reactions. Maybe it was just too YA for me because I found myself annoyed with her angsty self doubt. When she did act, she made impulsive, poor choices. The true strength of a Primera seems to be in line with all of those "Brenda asks to speak to the manager" memes.Cool concept, meh execution. It would be cool to see more casual Latin/Hispanic influence in other novels though. I did like that part.

WE SET THE DARK ON FIRE is speculative fiction at its best, interrogating patriarchy's underbelly with a keen eye and a sharp stick. Mejia's political allegory nesting inside an achingly beautiful love story is a gripping read that is perfect for this political moment. The pacing is lush and breathless in turns and makes a beautiful connection between personal/ sexual empowerment and political agency. A brilliant debut that will leave you begging for the sequel.

I think my expectations were too high for this book. WLW! Latinx! Dystopian! Only to be let down by bland, overly descriptive writing and not enough action. There may be potential here, but the writing style needs serious work. I probably won't be picking up the second novel.

I tried not to read this book in one sitting and was unsuccessful. From the first pages, I fell in love with the writing that creates a world so like our own. Dani is a relatable and fierce main character, who struggles with making hard decisions in a tough world but always knows exactly who she is. I loved watching the romance unfold too! I can't wait to follow Dani's adventure into the next book and see what she'll do with her place in this world.
