I have never worked as a professional programmer but was able to pass the OCP by a significant margin using Jeanne and Scott's study guides. To prepare I used their OCP book and the OCA/OCP Practice Test book. For each objective I read the chapter, did the questions in the Practice Test book, and then did the questions in the OCP book. I am pleased with the Practice Test book questions because they ensured I did not miss key points from the chapter before doing the harder questions in the OCP book. I don't recall any questions on the exam that were not covered at some point in their books so I highly recommend both study guides for anyone preparing for their OCP: Java SE8.
I have to be careful complaining when its Jeannie B. 1st - I think the book & its overall presentation - is awesome & the authors code is always awesome. 4 stars instead of 5 because - like 1 other reviewer said - the errors - are pretty bad. 1 Example - Chapter 6: Working with Methods and Encapsulation - question 36 = wrong info. The culprit - I believe - is careless editing from the publisher. In part of the Answer to Question 36 - Chapter 6, it indicates that the optional specifier of an instance variable cannot come before the access modifier. I'm looking at the code in my IDE: final protected int thursday = 4; It compiles just fine on my computer. However, it's listed as a compile-time error in the book. The explanation says; "the final modifier cannot appear before the access modifier". That's beyond the bounds of errata - imho. Nevertheless, there's an incredibly generous amount of info provided & I believe the book can help one accomplish its stated objective, of honing skills already built, from other materials/sources.
An excellent cross section of questions on all topics on the java 8 exam. Highly recommended, particularly paired with the authors' previous exam prep books.
The book is good, I used it to pass OCA. However, I noticed that a few questions in the real test were asking something not covered in this book. Probably Oracle updates its question base once in a while so this book is a little bit outdated.
The book is very helpful. I am using it as a guide for my after school coding class at the high school level.
The content is okay and tests are thorough, comprehensive (that would be 5 stars), however the book is rendered wrongly in the Android app. Only the last digit is visible of task numbers.I hope it will be fixed andIt's a technical book, it should be in PDF format! The OCA/OCP series are great books but backed by horrible Sybex. They drop you from their website after 1 year and you can no longer use online tools unless you spoof it with a different email address. Makes it difficult to review and polish up on skills you want to keep sharp.
Passed OCA with 81% largely due to this book. Unlike a lot of the other books that throw a lot of information at you then give you a handful of review questions, this book segregates the questions and drills you on specific subject areas. This is not really a study guide though. It's a practice handbook. You'll need another book to learn the main subject areas, then use this book to practice what you learn. The online test bank was very good too. I felt the questions in here were more representative of what I saw on the exam.
