Rhodesia’s Mounted Infantry: The Grey’s Scouts 1896 – 1980” the author Alexandre Binda provides the first book on the Grey’s Scouts, one of the few mounted infantry units raised after the Second World War and employed in the Rhodesian Bush War. The successful operation by units such as Rhodesian Special Air Service, the Rhodesian Light Infantry, the Selous Scouts and – last but not least – the Grey’s Scouts has attracted considerable attention to the Bush War in general and the tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) employed by these units in particular.1. The book starts off with a lengthy chapter (nearly 40 out of 288 pages) about the operations of the Bulawayo Field Force in the Matabele Rebellion of 1898. The original Grey’s Scouts, a volunteer unit raised by George Grey, formed part of the Bulawayo Field Force. The second chapter covers the founding years of the modern Grey’s Scout Regiment (1975-76), while each of the next four chapters roughly covers the following four years spent on counterguerrilla operations (1977, 1978, 1979, 1980). Five appendixes (additional photographs, roll of honour, list of honours and awards, nominal roll, regimental songs) complement the book.Structurally, Alexandre Binda starts each chapter with a short summary of the political development, thereby putting military strategy and operations in perspective. Thereafter, each chapter is largely a follow-up of personal anecdotes by former members of the regiments, interlinked by explanations and further information by the author as well as private and official after-action reviews.2. Despite the obvious praise on its folder cover, “The Equus Men” has numerous shortcomings: Alexandre Binda likely envisaged the first chapter on George Grey’s volunteer unit to explain the regiment’s name, the reason for the name chosen remains unclear throughout the book. Grey’s unit was the smallest of several unit which took part in the Matabele Rebellion and did not accomplish anything militarily outstanding legitimizing the naming of a regiment nearly 80 years afterwards. Therefore, despite the first chapter being the second longest of the book (with about 80 pages, the chapter on 1979 is the longest), the purpose of the first chapter remains largely unclear (though the Matabele Rebellion certainly is an interesting topic). By skipping the following 80 years until the creation of the experimental animal transport unit (ATU) in 1974, however, the author omits one important aspect: He fails to provide an overview over the experiences with mounted (infantry) units in the region, such as the Portugese Dragões de Angola (with a similar unit operating in Portugese East Africa / Mozambique, a direct neighbor of Rhodesia) and the mounted patrols of the British South African Police (BSAP) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (INTAF). The Rhodesian security forces did not operate in a vacuum but built on their experiences in the Malayan Emergency and the British experience in the Mau Mau Rebellion, with the famous Selous Scouts continuing the British concept of pseudo-terrorist operations.The four chapters covering the operational years of the Grey’s Scouts suffer from the author’s decision to let individual recollections and anecdotes drive the chapters. These recollections often cover considerable time and events and therefore overlap chronologically with a following recollection, thereby complicating the chapters unnecessarily. Secondly, this approach prevents the systematic presentation of recruitment, training (both soldiers and horses), TTPs, organizational structure as well as operational command and control, their pitfalls and their development over time.The regimental history ends abruptly with the elector victory of ZANLA and ZIPRA and their takeover in 1980, even though the regiment continued to exist for several years as part of the special forces of Zimbabwe. This is not even mentioned, nor is the experience of those not leaving the unit recounted. Alexandre Binda’s political bias likely accounts for this (see below).3. Finally, some notes on wording, graphs and photos: the amount of (Rhodesian) slang, particularly politized terms such as “CT” / “communist terrorist” negates the professional, objective character of the book (see below). The ability to use the original sketches of skirmishes, ambushes and other operations produced by their participants in the aftermath is great but is largely abandoned if their quality is low due. Revising them would have provided a better understanding of the respective operation, and even more so if Alexandre Binda would have analyzed each participants recollection systematically and objectively. The book also contains numerous photos taken by former members of the Grey’s Scouts during operations. However, these photos are often quite small, the subtitles give little explanation to the uninformed reader, and particularly the numerous photos in the appendix lack information on their date and the location.4. Similar to many other books on Rhodesia and the Bush War, and despite 37 years passed since the end of white rule, this book features an unreflective and uncritical political stance on Rhodesia. This is likely the outcome of decades of glorification of Rhodesia in general and the Bush War in particular by former (white) inhabitants of Rhodesia and results in assessments such as “[Operation] Dingo is now regarded as the greatest Special Forces raid in history” (p.79). Politically, the author classically locates the Bush War in a simple Cold War narrative: upright Rhodesians (black and white of course!) defend Rhodesia as an African outpost of the Free World against the socialist ZANLA and ZIPRA guerillas, supported by the so-called Frontline States, the Warsaw Pact and China, and betrayed by the socialist West European and North American politicians and press. The notion, that the restriction of political rights and economic opportunities fuels grievances and provides ample ground for political mobilization and support to an insurrection by the majority of the population (rather than primarily intimidation, though this certainly occurred as well) apparently never crosses the minds of die-hard Rhodesian. This also applies for the lack of support by the Free World, which defines itself through the universal provision of exactly those values denied to the majority of the population in Rhodesia.5. Overall, this book is an easy read and provides an interesting insight into one of the less known and less famous units of the Bush War. However, it does not fulfill the professional and objective standard of an “accomplished military historian” as Alexandre Binda is characterized on the cover. Nor does it provide much direct take-away for those interested in the use of mounted infantry units in counterguerrilla operations and unconventional warfare. Properly processed and analyzed – to speak with intelligence process – the collected raw data could provide useful information for the use of pack animal and mounted infantry unit, as proposed on the cover. For the likely audience, former members of the Grey’s Scouts and die-hard Rhodesians, however, this book is great.
