From the Inside Flap

"Until now, my websites looked great but have been coded with what seems like 'duct-tape and bubble-gum' methods, just for appearances and not for professionalism or compliance. This book taught me all that is possible with HTML and CSS coding]]. What a game changer!" That's what one web designer posted about a previous edition of Murach's HTML5 and CSS3. Now, this 4th Edition updates and improves all the HTML and CSS content in the book...and it adds coverage of Flexible Box and Grid Layout, two new CSS3 ways to implement page layouts. So whether you're a web designer, a JavaScript programmer, a server-side programmer, or a rookie, this book delivers all the HTML and CSS skills that you need on the job. This book begins with an 8-chapter hands-on course that teaches you HTML and CSS from scratch, including the latest HTML5 and CSS3 features. This short course ends with a chapter that teaches you how to use fluid design and media queries to implement Responsive Web Design so your pages will look good and work right on any screen, from phone to tablet to desktop. After that, the unique design of this book lets you go on to any other chapter to learn new skills whenever you need them. For example, chapters 9 and 10 show you how to use Flexible Box and Grid Layout. Chapter 13 shows you how to work with forms and data validation. Chapter 14 shows you how to enhance a site with video clips. Chapter 16 shows you how to use CSS3 transitions, transforms, and animations. Chapters 17 and 18 show you how to design and deploy a website. Chapters 19 and 20 introduce other professional skills like how to use JavaScript and jQuery and how to use development tools like Bootstrap, SASS, and Emmet. And after you've learned all the skills that you need, this book becomes the best on-the-job reference you've ever used.

Have a long history with HTML as well as CMS (like WordPress). Have been using on-line sources such as w3schools and others. However, a book like this is necessary as it organizes all those tidbits of html and css that one picks up online. It is a stand alone reference and you don't need to go to those online references to learn html and you can do it completely from this book. However it's very difficult to do things completely online as you just end up with many clips you put in a loose leaf book. Also it shows the latest methods in flexbox, floating columns, lists &etc. It's organized around building a website using HTML5 and CSS3 with each chapter dealing with different design concepts. Then the last 30% of the book deals with pick & choose advanced topics.A really necessary guide for anyone using html to develop & support websites. Also the book is nicely printed on clean white paper in a nice easy to read font. Complete with many B&W illustrations. I bought several books on HTML & CMS (not css) during this time and returned the other ones. A disclaimer: the colored index tabs are my own, added after purchase.

The writing and exposition in this book is unusually good, and the formatting (text on the left, examples and pictures on the right) works very well. The book is a joy to read, and the concepts they cover, they cover very clearly. This book is excellent for someone first learning HTML or CSS, and it covers how to combine the basic concepts to build the most common things one will want to put on a web site, such as multi-tier menus. The coverage is not really adequate for a working professional (or someone aspiring to be). For example, the "display" property is not adequately described, and the flexible box model is not covered at all. For responsive menus, they punt the design to an external jquery library: fine for getting a tiny web site off the ground, but not going to help you understand how an existing company did it in-house. I think if you combine this book with Gasston's CSS3 book, you'd have a winning combination which collectively cover what you need to know.

This is a really good book on HTML. Most technical book have typos and this has a few, but that is to be expected. Highly informative and worth the money. Well put together. I also believe in using as many books as possible because this covers 90 - 95% of what you need, get it. I've never found one source about web development that covers all areas but this one does a pretty good job.

I read this before taking a web design class at my local community college. But reading through this book was WAY more worthwhile than the class, which I ended up dropping because the professor was teaching things that I realized were completely outdated and flat out wrong after reading this book.

Needed to learn how to make web pages. Took a class and this was the required textbook.Finished with the class but I still use this book as reference material. There is so much here and it has helped me a great deal.

Nice book. Been working my through it - there are some things that are dated and no longer available such as the recommended editor but otherwise this is a good book.

Excellent coverage of HTML and CSS.Excellent downloads to accompany the text and illustrate the topics.Very clear and concise explanations of CSS topics and the text layout is easy to navigate with examples on the right side and explanations on the left side. This book and the downloadable examples have really chrystallized my understanding of this subject.Thank you Murach for a well written product.

I liked this book because is the only training book I found in the internet, have detailed explanations and many exercises to approach the use of HTML and CSS3. Thank you Murach's books, hope you released soon one regarding the learning of WordPress
