I'm a sucker for ghost stories and abandoned Japanese buildings, so this book was made for me. You get folktales, urban legends, bits of local and national history, odd nuggets of Japanese pop culture... and while I'm going to stick to the stories, which in my experience are better than the real thing (I have been to the Sunshine 60 building many times and it is the unspookiest normal office building/shopping mall that you can imagine, sorry guys) , addresses are included so you could even use it as a travel guide. Very fun!

I found Tara A Devlin through her podcasts, Toshiden and Kowabana. Reikan is written with the same care and entertaining style, and I even catch myself reading them in her voice. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in ghost spots!

The stories were well-told and scary! However, the author is still prone to repetition and typos (Hachiouji --> Hajiouji).

I LIVE for the days that Amazon notifies me Tara A. Devlin has a new publication "releasing soon" or is "now in stock." From her previous series "Kowabana" and "Toshiden" comes her latest installment entitled "Reikan" which dives deep into REAL haunted locations (in Japan) that terrorize the locals, and give thrill-seeking teenagers an excuse to perform "kimodameshi" or "tests of courage" to this day!The book is so incredibly written and just so darn fascinating! From Hokkaido to Kyushu.... this volume details real-life haunted areas from different regions of Japan and meticulously details the rich history behind the tales along with accounts of "modern hauntings" which have been investigated on the popular Japanese TV Show "Honto ni Atta Kowai Hanashi" or "True Scary Stories."I haven't put the book down since receiving it! For anyone who is a thrill seeker of their own and enjoys reading about real haunted locations, (*especially of Japan*) then THIS is the book for you! It's the perfect collection of hauntings, bundled into one volume to give you nightmares for days on end, and hopefully one day.... in the near future, we shall recieve further volumes to the REIKAN series to supplement our curious fascination with the other side.....

This was a fascinating account of haunted locations in Japan. The author also notes cultural differences; belief in the paranormal is more widespread there than here in the US and a great many youth go visiting these places with disastrous results. Locations, a bit of history and the flu tales are told. Unlike many places here in the US, the locations listed in this book should not be visited and the author clearly advises readers not to. Scary and interesting.
