Despite growing up in Ireland, I'd never heard of this murder until the author gave a radio interview a few days ago. He deserves much credit for telling this story, but it reads more like a first draft than a finished book. The author is careless in his use of religious terminology and there are some factual inconsistencies which should have been picked up before publishing. The author's descriptions of what 1970s Ireland was like become repetitive and he writes a lot about Satanism and its relationship to conventional religious belief without really explaining what his sources were. This was an important story to tell and the fact that it is so little-known raises a number of questions. That makes the book worth reading. However, the evident flaws in the telling and the superficiality of the analysis in places suggest that the author and editor should have given this book more time and attention.

I truly bought this book after reading the free preview. The most interesting parts were in the free preview. I thought the book would tell more about the boy who committed the murder and where and what he is doing these days, it leads you to believe that but then at the end shuts you down and you are denied that. :( But all in all not a bad read.

I was keen to read this book as it promised to bring to light a serious crime from the mid 20th Century. However, I must say I was quite disappointed in the book and only finished it because I wanted to find out what happened to the victim's family and the perpetrator. It seemed to jump around a lot and contained to much extraneous information on other events and crimes that were quite irrelevant.

The story is a chilling one and provides much insight into Irish Catholic life in the 70s. However, the perpetrator of this most horrible crime had obviously been monitored by the Authorities in the intervening period. He had put together a life and career now in ruins since his identity has been blown open and this I personally find disturbing.

I was fascinated by this book because I was living in the town where it happened, when it happened.I remember nobody knew for sure what exactly happened and everything was very hush hush. This was the first time I knew the details, 40 years later, when I read this book.It is a very sad story about a young boy who murdered a younger boy who lived next door in a small community. They knew each other all their lives and the families were friends. A very interesting read but a very sad story.M Lyons Galway
