This review pertains specifically to the ebook edition of THE EARLY CASES OF HERCULE POIROT from De Marque. For some time now, 50 Poirot short stories have been available in a single ebook collection claiming to be complete from HarperCollins selling for $12.99. Therefore, to now be able to get 25 of them in this collection for such a low price (actually, free as I write this) is a very good deal.At first I thought "The Adventure of the Christmas Pudding," the last of these 25, was missing from that larger set, which would have made this smaller set paticularly attractive, but upon closer inspection I discovered it was actually there under a different title, "The Theft of the Royal Ruby." So if you already own that larger, more expensive set, you really won't gain anything by also downloading this one. But if you don't own that HarperCollins set (perhaps because of its comparatively stiff price), this one from De Marque is a great way to obtain half of them. These are essentially puzzle-stories, short tales pitting Hercule Poirot against a problem that, ipso facto, challenges us to figure it out first. The stories are economically written and free from padding to communicate the essentials: the crime and its setting, and the subsequent depiction of its resolution by Poirot. There is little plot complication and bare-bones character development. That is why many Poirot fans find his novels more fully satisfying than his short stories. Nevertheless, each story by itself is fun to read, but I'd recommend spacing out your reading of them; there is a certain "tediousness" (for lack of a better word) that accrues when they are read, one puzzle after another. Savor them, enjoy them, but don't read them all at once. These particular stories are now (presumably) all in the public domain, and as such, may be obtained individually for free. But downloading this collection is a much handier way to instantly obtain 25 of them and keep them altogether in one place on your e-reader and in cloud storage. These short stories, however, are also being sold for $.99 (or more) apiece in the Kindle Store; be careful to avoid those. There is also a 13-story collection titled POIROT'S EARLY CASES; containing 12 fewer stories than this one, there's no need for that, either.Although these early short stories may not present Poirot at his finest (such as he appears in such classic novels as MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS and THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD), all fans of Agatha Christie mysteries, and of Hercule Poirot in particular, will most certainly want to read them.
I like the history of how these Poirot stories came into being. Agatha Christie never set out to become a professional writer. She was a married woman with a young child and THAT was her "career." She was delighted when a publisher accepted her first book ("The Mysterious Affair at Styles") and she signed the contract paying little attention to the terms. That book sold reasonably well for an unknown author, but she netted only 25 pounds for her work, hardly enough to convince her that writing could be a money-making affair for her.But the public was taken with her eccentric elderly detective from Belgium and they wanted more. To her surprise and delight, the editor of Sketch Magazine asked for some Poirot stories. Mrs. Christie wrote in her autobiography, "At last I was becoming a success. To be in The Sketch - wonderful!" Twelve stories appeared in the spring of 1923 and their popularity meant that thirteen more were commissioned and published in the fall of that year. Not only did the stories attract new Poirot readers and encourage the novice writer, they came in handy when she decided to change publishers. Realizing that her contract with her first publisher was a bad one, she wanted to complete her five-book commitment and find a publisher who'd pay more. She'd written three books after "Styles" so she needed one more. The Sketch stories were compiled and submitted as "Poirot Investigates." . That satisfied her commitment. She immediately signed with a different publisher and her first book with that company ("The Murder of Roger Ackroyd") was a huge success. As to the stories themselves, Christie admits to being very much under the influence of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories at the time. If you're a Holmes fan (and who isn't?) you'll quickly notice the similarities. Indeed, It's almost as if Poirot and his faithful narrator Hastings are whisked out of 1920's London and transported back to the gas-lit, horse-drawn carriage London of Holmes and Watson. Some of the stories are so derivative that I think the executors of Conan Doyle's Estate could have sued Mrs. Christie for plagiarism and won. Apparently, it wasn't a problem.Mrs. Christie said that the stories were written hastily and they show it. The quality varies widely. The "political" tales involving kidnapped Prime Ministers and stolen submarine plans are absurd and boring. But the more domestic dramas show Mrs. Christie's developing talent. I especially liked "The Adventure of the Cheap Flat" as it mirrors the difficulties of the young Christies as they hunted for a place to live in post-WWI London. These stories are not as good as Christie's later work, but some of them are very good reading. And the price is right. Enjoy!
I enjoy the writing of Agatha Christie and especially her Hercule Poirot series. I rarely rate a book a five star and a three rating is a strong rating for me for a fiction book.. Very entertaining.
A very fun repacked compilation of Hercule and his adventures with Captain HastingsOf course I see David Suchet in my mind now so the stories really come to life
As long as you understand that these mysteries/detective stories are SHORT stories, you're all right and I believe will find they're delightful. They can be read at one sitting, so read one, attend to that chore you've put off, and then read another. Agatha is at her usual best.
Entertaining and an easy read!
Good collection of short stories with Poirot doing what he dies best ... of course these are hard to put down and you're ready for the next one each time you finish one ...
Love Agatha Christie!
